Although there was no release of a large-scale new title, repeat sales such as the worldwide title "ELDEN RING" released in the previous fiscal year remained strong. This title has sold a total of 16.6 million copies worldwide.

That's a little insane, lol. Well deserved too, congrats to FromSoft and Bandai Namco

That amount is incredible in half a year. It took Monster Hunter World, what, 4 years to reach that? And I can't think of any other JP third party title that sold that much. Metal Gear wasn't that big, right?

No Metal Gear even got over 10 million unless you maybe added a bunch of version to 2?

Monumental success for FROM and Bandai. I guess I'll never play a FROM game again :) (too difficult for me personally and clearly they don't need to cater us casuals)

Monster Hunter World was the biggest 3rd party japanese games before ER.

Monster Hunter World is still the biggest third party Japanese game. Either at 18.3 million, or 21 million (the number used by Capcom in their "all-time record" statement which includes the Master Edition).

However, Elden Ring will most assuredly pass 21 million by year's end (holiday sales), or sometime in the first half of next year.

It's looking like its going to become the best selling Non Nintendo Japanese game of all time.

Which currently that title is held by Monster Hunter World right?

After 2 quarters, Elden Ring is the 3rd fastest Japanese-published game of all time:
1) Animal Crossing New Horizons: 22.40M in 4 months
2) Pokemon Sword/Shield: 17.37M in 5 months
3) Elden Ring: 16.6M in 5 months
4) Pokemon Sun/Moon: 15.44M in 5 months
5) New Super Mario Bros Wii: 14.70M in 5 months
6) Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl: 14.65M in 5 months
7) Super Smash Bros Ultimate: 13.81M in 4 months

Elden Ring will probably start tracking ahead of Pokemon Sword/Shield in a few months.

I wonder what Elden Ring success means for From Software and if they will try to not depend on Bamco or other 3rd party publishers in the future for publishing outside Japan

New Super Mario Bros. Wii did 14,70m in a similar timeframe as BD/SP (it launched Nov 15 in EU, Nov 20 in NA and Dec 03 in JP)

Mentioned several ideas for achieving strong results on a regular basis in the Kadokawa Q1 earnings thread. FROM SOFTWARE could negotiate better royalty terms with Bandai Namco for Elden Ring 2 or any future similar games or publish titles like Armored Core 6 through Kadokawa (via Dwango) subsidiary Spike Chunsoft, maybe with its own logo on the box to raise brand awareness.

I doubt it. They already could have done that based on the huge success of Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro yet still went back to Namco. I feel like anything they wanted to do they could have already done or demanded.

Dark Souls 3 entered development before Kadokawa purchased FROM SOFTWARE (Hidetaka Miyazaki mentioned it was the last project from before the acquisition). Sekiro began as Tenchu which ties into a past business relationship with Activision Blizzard. Elden Ring is a much bigger sales hit than even Bandai Namco projected so there is every reason for Kadokawa & FROM to negotiate the best possible deal with Bandai Namco for any sequel, as well as any other publisher or (as I mentioned above) self publish some or all of its own titles going forward. edit: typo

My point was about what they could have done with Elden Ring based on the massive success of their previous games. Not about Souls 3 and Sekiro themselves.

From can probably negotiate a better deal but as far as the ER IP they can't do anything without Bamco now. Like with Dark Souls, BNGI funded and owns it and presumably From was happy with this arrangement since it's the 4th time they entered into a similar contract.

This really makes me wonder if From Soft is going to return to Souls formula or will press forward with Elden Ring 2.

The same dilemma that Classic 3D Zelda vs BoTW there. The new games simply has outshine the original and it will be hard to return back there.

This really does portray how impressive of a result this is. It's the Skyrim/Witcher 3 of the 9th generation, no doubt.

Skyrim was similar (10m in a month roughly) but TW3 was a slower legger (10m in a year roughly iirc). BOTW fell between them but was somewhat hampered by being a launch title.

That thing will reach 30M after its release on Drake and the inevitable launch of the Remaster edition on PS6/Next Xbox, right?

If they plan it accordingly, this can be an evergreen title for both Bandai and FROM like GTA V, The Witcher 3 or Skyrim.

Really impressive, and the game still didn't have a sale so far on Steam or PS Store (no clue about Xbox but I'm assuming it didn't as well).

This game legs really never end. Japanese dev really coming back with strength there. What a phenomena for Elden Ring there.

It still boggles my mind that Elden Ring hit mainstream. It's been in Steam's Global top 100 for 49 weeks in a row now and it continues to rank relatively high in the charts on Steam. As I'm typing this, it's currently sitting at #31 in Steam's Global top 100.

Congrats on the very symbolic milestone!

The announcement comes a few days before the game's 1st anniversary so it did manage 20m in less than a year.

Very few games can achieve that, especially with the low amount of discounts ER got since launch.

Very impressive considering it only had one discount and it wasn't even that steep. After the first week or so after launch I expected lifetime sales of 30m and I still stand by that number.
