Mainland Europe without Germany (and UK, of course), which is ultimately a somewhat small market. NPD will give us the final conclusion, but a repeat of last Q4 isn't in the cards really.

I believe the data you are referring to does not cover UK or Germany and the total consoles sold (including switch + Xbox) was only 475,000.

That's not going to make their forecast come true with a slight increase vs last year

Mainland Europe is small, yet Italy, Spain and France are included in that. Also, Europe as a whole is vastly bigger than Germany at least regarding gaming market. According to Statista, France is slightly above Germany in gaming market. Italy is big too.

In Japan PS5 hardware spiked last February, when did that happen in Europe, because if that was also February who cares if it's up a bit in January.

PS5 sales jump 202% YOY in Jan 2023 https://www.gamesindustry.biz/ps5-sales-jump-200-across-europe-last-month-european-monthly-charts

PS5 sales jump 5x YOY in Feb 2023 https://www.gamesindustry.biz/hogwa...fifa-for-a-generation-european-monthly-charts

Mar 2023 was also a 5x jump YOY https://www.gamesindustry.biz/q1-pc...down-11-across-europe-european-monthly-charts

February and March are the key months to show YOY declines.
Just to check in how that's going for PS5 in their European stronghold:

Spain

Jan 2003: 26,000
Jan 2004: 56,000

Feb 2003 (2 weeks): 17,000
Feb 2004 (2 weeks): 10,500

The truth of the matter is the reason "Europe" was up this January is that supply was still being normalized on the continent last year. UK already had things well sorted and supplied by January last year which is why the region was down this year.

It's like people forgot last CYQ1 was a record breaking outlier and why that was...

The strategy to do sales so soon is pretty strange when you consider they never really went into that strategy for the PS4 even at the end of its life outside of Black Fridays and the official $350 price cut of the base model. (A brand new PS4 slim MW bundle from walmart/PS direct is still $300). Though since the PS5 price is starting off higher than the PS4 in general I guess they can afford to do it for now.

There were questions from analysts years ago on whether such long and severe supply constraints especially during Covid would stump momentum overall for the new consoles and it's too early to tell but it does feel like PS5 might have missed that golden chance to breeze past 130m because it missed the 2021 Covid boom. Couldn't be helped of course and there's still at least... 5? years left to this gen as well as a GTA release. It'll be interesting to watch.
I said this in August after their June results and it seems like it being abnormal was correct The fact that they did even more sales after this was proof that they were indeed trying to move more consoles at the expense of profit and it didn't go well for either. The console is still doing great, the actual results will still be great but yeah they took a gamble and lost a bit..

I think gta Vi will be held back by the ps5 more than the ps5 will benefit from VI

PS5 was short on stock for so many years that Sony overestimated its pent-up demand when the shortages ceased. That is the only explanation.

They did the same with the PS4, which was cut permanently to $349 in October 2015, almost 2 years after launch, then the slim launched in September 2016 just under 3 years after launch. Promotions in November and December 2016 had the slim for $249 with a game or 2 included.

Price reductions is nothing new with Sony, they just expected to sell more units at $499/£480/€549/¥67000 which didn’t happen.

A Big IF the reach their new 21m units for this FY will still be a great result nevertheless.

Looks like discount is happening across Europe. 75€ discount = 475€ for Slim with Disc

€475 in Europe and £420 in UK.

Europe is the only region where the PS5 is behind the PS4 launch aligned, and with a very significant amount.
