With the recent announcement of ER selling 1M+ in Japan despite a 370k (outdated) sell through on PS4/5 from physical sales, a lot of questions have been raised on the state of digital data in JP.

Do we have further examples to show an insight into digital data in JP. The cases I have:
  • FF7R : 700k sold (close to sold out), 1M+ total (PS) => 30+% digital
  • P5R : 260k shipped, 400k total (PS) => 35% digital
  • 13 sentinels : 120-150k sold/shipped (?), 200k total (PS) => 25-40% digital
  • MHW : 2.6M sold (inc Iceborne Master edition), 3.18M total (PS) => 20% digital (35% not inc the master edition)
  • Elden Ring - 370k sold, 1M+ total (PS+PC) = ~<60% digital
  • EDF6 - 92k sold, 300k total (PS) => ~<70% digital
    • 360K 07/03/23, ~140K sold = ~60% digital
  • Falcom - 20% digital on Playstation
  • Witcher 3 - 1M total sold (PS+PC), ~400k physical => 50-60% digital
  • Disgaea 7 - 50k sold (PS+PC), 23-32K shipped retail => 50-60% digital
  • Melty Blood: Type Lumina - 400K sold, 32-40K shipped retail => 90% digital
  • Ghost of Tsushima - 1M sold (PS), ~600K retail => 40% digital
  • Armored Core 6 - 216k sold (PS), 700K total (PS+PC) = ~70% digital
  • Ed-0: Zombie Uprising - 2.48K physical , 1.83K digital (PS) = 42% digital
  • YS X - 40% digital (total sales 50% PS5, 30% NSW, 20% PS4)
Nintendo have a special deals program:
  • Fire Emblem 3H : 280k sold, 530k total => 47% digital (voucher program)
  • Splatoon 3 : 1.935M sold, 3.45M total (80-100% sell through) => 32-44%
  • Zelda ToTK : 2.5M total, 1.12 retail sold (60-80% sell through) => 20-40%
One thing to note is variance in the data. The UK market has shown us some titles sell 15% digital while others have up to 80%. Even in the middle bulk, the spread can be 20-30%. Its best not to assume averages unless one has more specific data.

It will be interesting to see the data out there summed in a single thread regardless.

Astral Chain was also figured to have ~70% digital in Japan based on regional shipments vs packaged sales tracking iirc. I'm sure we can find good ranges for a lot of Nintendo software this way but as mentioned their voucher program has a real impact on this.

Didn't we also figure MH Rise had 30-40% digital based on subtracting tracked sales from the analyst ratio for Japan (over 50% of 7.7m)?

EDF6 retail should be between. 120k-150k with additional shipment and on shelves (especially ps5 version ,right be 15k-20k extra)

Digital should be over 50% though, closer to 60%

Yeah, no question digital percentages are popping off in Japan. It's not often that we have a clear picture, but lately when official data is shared ala EDF/Elden Ring it's been higher than what we know of physical, and not really close.
 
Breath of the Wild is sitting at something like 2.09 million tracked physical sales, and about 3.07 total shipment, yeah? Even accounting for untracked physical sales that's, what, ~25-30% digital?

Vouchers made the game jump up from its initial sub 10% digital, and now probably does more than 50% digital weekly now

We officially know that TotK sold 2,24M retail+digital at launch in Japan. Not shipped.


Famitsu reported 1,12M retail sales. That's almost 50% digital at launch, not 20-40%.
