More mainstream games like SMW are leggier and less frontloaded than RPGs with huge nostalgia in gaming communities. So I wouldn't be surprised if it opened lower than SMRPG but it outsold it LTD
Super Mario Bros Wii sold close to 1m in retail first week.
The expectation is that Wonder will sell a huge amount right off the bat, much more than Super Mario RPG.
However, those games are less preorders heavy than RPG and they usually pick up closer to launch, not 3 months out.
That is likely in big part nostalgia doing it's work here.

Daily average across the past week since this comment is 5.267. Starting to feel a lot safer to suggest Pikmin 4 pre-orders will end slightly ahead of FFXVI. At the same point as FFXVI (9 days from release), Pikmin 4 is now 26 points ahead. A continued 5-6 points per day on average would still put it ahead of FFXVI in spite of FFXVI’s final week pre-order jump.

Pikmin 4 is currently ahead launch-date-aligned compared to FFXVI, but if it doesn't get +6 tomorrow it won't be, considering that the latter got a +29 boost 4 days before release. In all, Pikmin 4 needs a +19, or +5 a day on average to finish ahead of FFXVI.
Even if it ends slightly behind, considering Pikmin 4 doesn't seem like a preorder heavy game there are still chances that it ends slightly ahead of FFXVI COMG-wise, or even its famitsu FW numbers. We'll soon see.
