With this thread complete, we now have a full collection of public NPD results starting from when the NPD crackdown started in 2007 to today.

I would like to do prior years, starting from 2000 since that's when the PS2 launched, but I want a good enough and consistent top 10 or top 20 of software for each month, and right now I'm kinda spent on doing these threads every week for the past few months.

If anyone has those results or knows where to find them, thanks. I have the hardware month to months for that period, so it's just the software rankings and numbers I'd need.

Meanwhile, there's actually a lot more data that was available to the public for the years of 2007 and after that I wasn't aware of, so over time I'll be updating those threads with new information in the OP. In fact, 2007 looks completely different if you care to look

They are saying that they suspend the publication of these Books.
So we can't expect anything this summer.

The last time we had an issue with CESA was with the 2021 edition (covering 2020 data):
In January 2021 they anonced a "delay" and at the end the book was out in May 2022 instead of July 2021.

Impossible to known when they will come back but I reallly doubt we will get anything before 2025 and even early 2025 seams unlikely (they would have talk about a delay instend of a suspension)

The only substitute I can found to CESA is the Famitsu White Paper that is generally out in August.

They said having data for North America and Europe so I guess it's similar to CESA.

I get that console fans love their consoles. The US video game hardware market is, however, a mature market at this point. It's not dying by any means. But the market is what it is. Have to get beyond the boxes in the US to find growth.

granted some is because dedicated handhelds died. when sony used to have psp, vita etc, and nintendo had ds, 3ds, and these sold 100's of k a month. all that is poof gone now.

but it's even much worse if as i assume these charts are not inflation adjusted! plus, the us population has inflated some significant amount since 2007 ish as well.

On the handheld front, we do have ROG Ally, Legion Go, Steam Deck, and countless Chinese retro handhelds. I am not sure which if any of these NPD tracks (seems would be difficult for them to track Chinese retro handhelds, as many are sold direct from China with no middleman). However my gut says the total number of all these is absolutely nothing compared to DS or PSP heyday. Chinese retro handhelds based on their indigogo listings initially etc seem to sell in the batches of 100's, dozens, maybe 1k, very small numbers. Of course there are lots of variants. by definition chinese retro handhelds will not be mainstream, as they usually require a lot of nerd knowledge and time to get up and running, or "set up" as they say. altho some do come with a crappy rom setup out of the box.

TL DR: Consoles beyond the Nintendo one seem in trouble. One day we will all be playing PC. Just kidding, a little.
