Christopher Dring unveils "The Game Business", his new games industry publication focusing on market insights, data... [1st episode is out]

Overview Discussion (15)

Here we go! I am launching a new games industry publication called The Game Business. It’s a podcast (called The Game Business Show) and a newsletter (with a website element), which I’ve developed in partnership with @geoffkeighley
More through here https://thegamebusiness.com/p/introducing-the-game-business

So what is "The Game Business" ?

There are two type of content provided by the new publication, podcasts and a newsletter:
The first is The Game Business Show, which are effectively video podcasts and interviews that are roughly 30 – 45 minutes in length. These Shows take place twice a week (with the occasional bonus episode) every Tuesday and Thursday. We will have a ‘feature’ Show, which could be an interview or a deep dive into a specific topic. And then you’ll receive our ‘news and analysis’ program, which focuses on the latest developments, trends and data, complete with exclusive stories and insight you won’t find anywhere else.

Those Shows can be downloaded as a podcast, watched on YouTube, and we’ll also post insightful segments on social channels.
The second part of TGB is our Newsletter. Alongside both Shows, we’ll be delivering the same insight (and occasionally a bit more) directly into your inbox. Of course, if you prefer, you can read it on a website (as you’re probably reading this), and we’ll be sharing written information via social media such as LinkedIn, too.

On Geoff's support:

Geoff may be backing it, but TGB is not part of The Game Awards (despite the acronym). This is a separate entity that I’m responsible for. But Geoff’s support does mean we can go faster, I can make most of it free, and it means we can put on our first event: The Game Business Live, which takes place alongside Summer Game Fest in June.

On the kind of content covered:

I am very excited to get going with this. Expect market insight, data, analysis, interviews… and we’ve got loads coming up. The first episode is tomorrow, and we’re covering GTA, Assassin’s Creed, GDC and a load more besides. Let me know what you think
And in the future?
But most of all, please take part. This is your publication after all. What do you like? Where are we going wrong? Who should we be talking to? What areas do you feel need covering? I want to hear it. I am not particularly hard to find, but if all else fails, you can reach me via [email protected].

Congrats and good luck @Christopher Dring in this new adventure!

We’ll be covering what’s selling, what’s trending and what’s struggling, we’ll be analysing established and emerging platforms, distribution channels, monetisation practices, new markets, policy changes, shifting player behaviours, the battle for time in a world without any, and so much more.

And we’ll be doing that in two main ways.

Of course, if you prefer, you can read it on a website (as you’re probably reading this), and we’ll be sharing written information via social media such as LinkedIn, too.

It’s pretty simple. TGB will deliver focused information, insight and analysis in whatever form that suits you. You can read it in your inbox, on our website and on social media, you can listen to it via whatever podcasting platform you use, and you can watch it on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and so on.

I sent this concept around to hear what the industry thought. Lots of people offered me excellent advice, but one person who was particularly encouraging was Geoff Keighley (he of The Game Awards fame). Geoff didn’t just like the idea, he asked if he could fund the project. I’ve known Geoff for a few years, his enthusiasm for this industry is infectious and I jumped at the offer.

Ooh awesome, this sounds like it's especially made for us Install Base nerds!

I really hope this does well, I've been missing the GI.biz microcast so looking forward to getting this into my podcast mix.

We need independent reporting. Its clear companies, the handful of official data trackers and now the handful of games media ownership companies all have it in their best interest to not reveal sales data.

Always great to have a new publication in an industry were so many have closed down. Also good on Keighley for putting his gravitas behind the project to help it grow.

Ok, that is interesting. Nice to see that Chris is back to the podcasting, I do miss "What do the numbers mean?"

the problem is they can only give what companies clear them too.

the real problem is over time digital will conceal most everything. right now theres a retail side data thats somewhat out of publishers control, but it's diminishing rapidly in importance obviously.

oh well we still have our tidbits, things like amazon #'s, online store rankings, and steam ccu, the occasional pr, financial reports etc. that's pretty much all we have already and the board subsists.

Episode is out! Discusses GTAVI, Assassin's Creed, Tariffs and the ESA accessibility initiative.

I'll take a listen later! I'm curious about the Accessible Games Initiative. It seems like it's gonna be a big thing, considering Google, Amazon, and the big three console makers are all a part of it from the beginning.
