Top Sellers for Steam in 2024(cut off date is December 15):
Lots of categories, remember that there's no ranking within the tiers.
Some crazy numbers for Capcom in here - MHWilds preorders alone are already in the same revenue bracket as this year's actual GotY candidates, likewise we can see that even with incredibly deep discounting MHWorld is still driving massive revenue. When you see how much relative revenue stuff like this and e.g. Civ 6 drives at deep discounts, it does give (some) evidence that the strategy of heavily discounting your catalog titles in anticipation of upcoming games can be successful (and doesn't appear to conflict with the full price sales of preorders/new releases - Wilds and Civ7 are certain to be gigantic in 2025).

On the left is the global revenue sales from Tuesday 17th December - Tuesday 24th December, and on the right is the previous weeks revenue.

If you remove all the F2P titles and the Steam deck, VII Rebirth was sitting at 8th last week and now 19th this week.

It's still doing reasonably well. More so, given a Steam-wide sale started on the 20th December with some tasty offers on some big titles.

Wish lists are up to 22.1k with 30 days until launch which puts it around 1.6k followers behind Metaphor 30 days prior to it's own release. FFXVI only obtained those numbers 8 days before launch.

Final Fantasy XVI it was in #69 in the second week of pre order

Late for the usual Tuesday Global Top Sellers, It's Christmas y'all!

Balatro daily CCU peak - 35,488
That is rather very close to the all-time peak of 37,977 set on Sunday March 10th.
With the game being available on Mobile since September and the Award Season buzz I would not be surprised if the total CCU across platforms could be higher than during its initial launch.
Strong possibility that the game hits a new Steam peak during this weekend as well, something to look out for.

Sonic Adventure 2 new CCU record - 1,216

It managed to get a new peak CCU in 4 of the past 5 days (missing out on Monday by a hair). I wonder how much longer it can ride this momentum out. If it can get to 1,492, that'll be double the pre-movie boost peak from September of this year (746)

Update December 26 - 1,315

Some CCU numbers about older titles that I didn't get on time:

The Forest new CCU record(yesterday) - 98,323
After a couple days of not hitting a new high, post-Christmas is there to the rescue.
Beats the previous record set back on Monday Dec 23rd.

Balatro daily CCU peak(yesterday) - 37,589
Just shy of the all-time peak of 37,977.
New CCU record is imminent, either today or on weekend proper.

-----

Elden Ring Nightreign is now #8 in wishlists, it has passed Unrecord and Arena Breakout: Infinite in the process.
Up next is Ark 2 which is currently at #7.

Older titles CCU:

The Forest new CCU record - 104,938
The game hits 100K CCU for the first time when it has been released in EA since 2014 and 1.0 since 2018.

Balatro new CCU record - 38,506
Launch CCU of 37,977 has been defeated.

never did a SHS for November. since it's late, any numbers would have since stabilized

Always impressed by how consistently well Cyberpunk does whenever it goes on sale. It's sitting pretty on the top 10 despite this being the second time it was discounted in December.

Old titles with new CCU records:

The Forest new CCU record - 109,397
It just keeps going up and up. I would really like the studio to say how much the game has sold, estimates puts it in the 15-22M~+ copies sold range on Steam alone, that's pretty much the same tier as the highest confirmed selling horror games Phasmophobia and Dying Light.

Balatro new CCU record - 39,430
That December trajectory has been insane, also I figured out why the game suddenly got within the Top 10 in the Anglosphere for a few days. It was Markiplier's video on Dec 22nd, 2.6M views is kinda big.
I also spot a Part 1 in that video title, that means more visibility for the game when Part 2 drops.
LocalThunk and PlayStack are feasting this holiday season!

The relatively new 55% discount point is going to ensure that it'll stay that way for a while. Just imagine how much more revenue CDPR could've generated if the game had the time to cook properly, none of that 50% off less than a year in.

can't wait for a new wave of "palworld lost 90% of it's playerbase"

Social media (in the west) pretty much moved on from Palworld discourse entirely.

Next time it will go viral again is when we get updates on the lawsuit.

Balatro new CCU record - 40,623
The game hits the 40K mark! A new milestone achieved, very impressive.
I'm sure we'll get a new milestone post from LocalThunk/PlayStack fairly soon, probably sometime in January.
The game is continuing to sell rather well and you know that people are going to be talking about the game post Holidays, so should spill over some more in January.

Next up is the new game content set to release sometime in 2025.

-----

I want to give a shout-out to Path of Exile 2 and Marvel Rivals who have weathered the discount storm and are comfortably currently(and have been for a few days) #3-4 just under CS2 and Steam Deck.

I think that Marvel Rivals has pretty much answered if the game will be a flash in the pan at this point.
It's holding extremely well in player counts and spending a few weeks in. That's enough time for MP GaaS games to fall if they were meant to. Now it's all about delivering that cadence of new game modes/new characters/ new skins on a timely manner in the upcoming quarter(s).

I was wondering how Palworld would do in the long-term after that massive 2M player peak. Looks like it'll be decently popular (unless Nintendo's lawyers kill it lol)

Balatro has entered the pantheon of Indie games, it's gonna keep on selling for years like your Hollow Knight, Hades, Celeste and Ori. It's just that good.

Update December 26 - 1,315

Now at 1,636. Almost an additional 200 on Sunday. It's been going up every day. Crazy. I guess might as well shoot for 2k.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth continues to gather wish-listers and sales. It's now sitting at #48 in the most wish-listed games at 24.2k with 25 days until release, which puts it at around 700 behind Metaphor at the same stage of it's release cycle and well ahead of FFXVI (13.0k). It's still around 3k behind P3 : Reload though.

It's also tracking to finish the week at around #35 in the best-sellers for week December 25th - December 31st (taking away F2P games and the Steam Deck). From around #8 in Week 1 to #20 in Week 2. I'd expect this to pick up again next week as the Steam sales end, and the release date gets closer.

I feel like it will do really well

Yeah, FFVII remake has a specific trajectory on PC that lends itself to Rebirth outperforming it.

In any case there's also the double pack, with Rebirth raising sales of the original, so even if that's the case, it's a win-win situation I think.

I feel like it will do really well

It's just jumped back up to #28 again. (minus the F2P titles)

I think it'll start off pretty strong personally with a CCU between 40-60k. There aren't any 'big' titles due to launch until the end of January, so most people right now are playing PoE2, Palworld and Marvel Rivals. Fast forward another few weeks and people will be craving a 'new' big title to play on PC, which lends itself well to a critically acclaimed title like Rebirth that's had good word of mouth this last year.

Looking at January, Rebirth and Spiderman 2 are comfortably the biggest single player releases.

This year was the Wukong awards, I don't think anyone is surprised considering that the Steam Awards are popularity contests with a slight bit of trolling in some of the categories.

My favourite award was "Outstanding Visual Style" with Silent Hill 2 as a the winner.
Why?

This is the description of the category:
Visual style doesn't aspire to real-world graphical fidelity (though a noble goal in itself)… it describes a distinctive look and feel that suffuses an entire game.

Lmao!

Its fine, enjoy the festivities

Awesome numbers for Rivals. It's going to be really good if they can keep the momentum up until S1 which I think drops January 10th. New heroes and new BP is going to be great.

#Valve #Halflife #GMan #2025

Cryptic video from the G-Man Voice Actor, the account hasn't tweeted since Dec 2020 when Alyx launched.

2025 Might just be Goated.

Certainly a huge opportunity for the game to capitalize on a January without a clear huge release.

its weird how the hl3 tease, somehow seems a bit ignored. time has moved on, many hl fans have likely aged out. it reminds me of many of the movie sequels that i feel like only old people care about, like bill and ted's 2. i heard of a few more coming recently, like forest gump 2

i always knew hl3 is a no win, it literally cannot live up to expectations. for this reason alone i expected valve to leave it alone. and surely many ppl are dubious and hype will grow if it turns out to be real.

if real the cynic in me says valve only made it to tie in for some new steam os push, probably the rumored steam os console-box thing, which i actually find pretty interesting.

Happy New Year 🥳🥳

Which means... new thread!
