1st Party output strategy | Discussion thread

you love to see it (at least, I am - always like the brand and see MS investing in it it great)
I've been thinking about it lately and I'm pretty sure Gears of War is my favorite IP in gaming - my PFP here used to be Kait Diaz, actually - . It's really a remarkably consistent series in terms of quality. You have a series spanning 19 years, 7 games and 2 expansions and the lowest rated game in that group, the game Gears of War fans criticize to hell and back... still has an 80 on Metacritic - Judgment - . How many 20-year-old IPs with 7 entries can say that? It truly is remarkable. Mass Effect can't say that. Nor can Assassin's Creed, or Call of Duty, or Battlefield...

I think that Noah Caldwell-Gervais explains quite well why everybody should play these games. They have something for everybody. It's a franchise that adapts to your tastes. You can take them - quite like Cole Train does in the games themselves to cope with war-related trauma - like a mindless explosion of fun, skipping cutscenes, cracking jokes and just shooting monsters and not paying attention to the story or you can - like I do - replay them religiously analyzing the dialogue and the cutscenes, finding collectibles and lore and focusing on the story and the characters.

Both perspectives are valid and the franchise respects both the dudebro who is simply interested in cutting monsters in half with a chainsaw and the person who enjoys the games for their very good narrative work - like Noah and countless lore enthusiasts and video game essayists on YouTube - . This duality was even represented in the development of the franchise itself in Cliff Bleszinski and Rod Fergusson - the former was interested in the post-apocalyptic-but-gothic aesthetic, the designs of the weapons and the enemies and the multiplayer; the latter was interested in the lore, the story, the setting and the characters - and yet somehow, through some miracle... they made it work. It was truly a great example of creative synergy. And the series is still alive and kicking 20 years later.

The brand desperately needs a revival so those are good moves by MS to increase awarness/mindshare over it before the next big game.
So I'm thinking that since Reloaded is coming out this year, E-Day will most likely be launching next year. That's gonna be 7 years between 5 and E-Day. Kinda crazy for a franchise that's traditionally always put out mainline sequels every two years - yes I know Hivebusters and Tactics came out in 2020, but those were an expansion and a spin-off - . In that context it does make sense to release Reloaded this year, but the wait has really made fans feel nervous and even negative towards Xbox. r/Gearsofwar was on fire last year when it dawned on people that E-Day was not launching in 2024 lol.

Very positive previews for Death Stranding 2, not sure it will greatly help sales unless it scores into the 90’s but it should be a GOTY contender

I've seen a lot of people on Twitter celebrating the leak and praying this leads to the downfall of ASW or that they somehow "deserved it" - didn't realize they were such a hated company, or maybe this is just general FGC toxicity. Whole things sucks honestly... Really curious how source code leak of an active, currently supported game will affect its development.

Anyways this Nintendo game seems to be a small project - there's a spreadsheet where they list the budget, dev time, price, etc. (not sure if I can share), and it looks like it's going to be a short and cheap ~1h long experience (that was originally intended as a launch title, probably in the vein of Welcome Tour).

If anything it should confirm that Nintendo will have a second wave of reveals later in the year because unless this is really small it would have had its place in the Switch 2 Direct (or the Switch 1 Direct just before).

Its mostly people not happy with Strive and wanting other games from them. I would not say they are a hated company.

Anything else of note leak?

The game I was talking about, codenamed "Life", that's had a ton of art assets leaked seems to actually be different from the initial leak, which is something codenamed "Watari" that we don't have any info on afaik. Also, while seemingly NS2 exclusive, they seem to be self-published by ASW, so they aren't even relevant for this thread 😅.

I agree, in fact I tried to move discission in the third party thread, but the second game could still be Nintendo (publishing) related..? It really looks like a Cing game lol

It's the main Cing artist but he also worked on stuff at ASW and even adv stuff (Chase CCF, Tokyo Twilight Hunters).

kinda interesting how Nintendo can have a 2-4 big games each year for the Switch 2, depending on the franchise.. wouldn't surprise me if the consistent releases is gonna be the main reason the Switch 2 will succeed

Like, one year can have Pokémon, 3D Mario and Xenoblade 4, meanwhile a Different year can have Pikmin 5, 3D Zelda and Fire emblem

Very curios how the development pipeline will be for the NS2 generation, since I can see it being very good

Bloomberg: Jade Raymond Leaves Haven Studio (Fairgame$)

PlayStation leadership didn’t give Haven staff a reason for her departure, but it came several weeks after an external test of Haven’s first game, the online shooter Fairgames, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Some developers at Haven were concerned about how the game was received and its progress, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they aren’t authorized to speak publicly.

Just kill it already, stop it's suffering.

The fact Fairgames (I refuse to put the dollar sign in there) even made it this far after the recent cancellation of the mulitplayer games at BluePoint and that other team is frankly very surprising.

So within the span of 24 hours:

- Stellar Blade enters controversy over it being unavailable in many regions
- Arrowhead announced that their next game will be fully funded by themselves
- Jade Raymond leaves Haven Studios, putting Fairgames up in the air
- Extremely damning plagiarism allegations come out against Marathon

Sony quietly had a really bad day. I’m surprised this isn’t talked about more. Actually not that surprised, but still.

The Arrowhead news isn’t negative at all. An Independent team incubating a project for the distant future while the majority of their development team continues work on their highly successful multiplayer title is like the least newsy headline in gaming.

The Marathon thing is disgusting, I expected it to be the usual "oh if you squint hard enough you see similarities" and instead it's "Twitter artist may as well have been the main artist of the project".

Bungie was a reactive acquisition.
Sony always benefited from the status quo. When Venture Capital and Big Tech (Microsoft) decided to massively invest in gaming SIE had to react. This were the times when it was quite probable that 2024 was the last year a COD would be on PlayStation.

That Covid and the big delays in MS GP schedule together with the enormous salary hikes in the US forced MS to go Multiplatform was a incredible swing in Sonys favor.

Most acquisitions after ZeniMax were overpriced and most new studios failed spectacularly. Sandfall is the glorious exception.

For SIE:

Insomniac: incredible valuable for SIE

Nixxes: good; needed for PC ports and making remasters for their catalogue games

Housemarque: Returnal was a modest success and Saros will release next year

Valkyrie: silent helper for SMS

Bluepoint: mixed; helped GOWR (SIE‘s fastest selling game); next game cancelled

Firesprite: mixed; released a good VR game and will make a survival horror game, their MP Twisted Metal game was cancelled/ not approved

Bungie: overpriced

Firewalk: Concord…

Neon Koi: closed; reason unknown
——
Evo: ???

EVO has been good for them as far as I know but i don’t consider that SIE related, thats Sony.

I don’t really think Firesprite has been fruitful, it’s a massive studio and they’ve only produced a VR game, while technically impressive didn’t even win an award that year. It’s not been 3 years since we’ve heard anything out of them and if they’re only working on one game, i don’t really understand whats going on there. It’s been a management nightmare as well

The crazy thing is that if Sony knew a few years ago that Microsoft would go multiplatform, none of the GAAS studio acquisitions and GAAS push would have happened to the degree that it did. Sony could then have focused only on 1-2 GAAS games, instead of the 10 or so they started working on in a desperate attempt to get a CoD replacement.

Games fail sometimes, but it's hard to recall a publisher pivot falling on its face as hard Sony's live service initiative.

Microsoft pretty much played chicken with them and no one really won.

The Marathon situation may be one of the worst cases of plagiarism I've ever seen. I'm starting to think the game could get delayed by month or two just so the devs can make sure there aren't any other plagiarized assets and textures in the game that haven't already been identified by the public.

Ex-Bungie Dev Says Marathon Leadership Was “Extremely Toxic And Humiliating” To Work With: “Bungie Leadership Needs To Be Gutted Completely”

The latest blow came from a former Bungie developer who worked on Marathon, Gareth Jensen (known online as Spirited), who shared a comment about his experience on social media. On Sunday, Jensen posted on Bluesky, saying, “As a former Bungie employee who worked on Marathon, I feel for those still at the studio. Working with engineering / Marathon leadership was extremely toxic and humiliating. I won’t speak about the rest, but Bungie leadership needs to be gutted completely.”

This isn’t the first time Jensen has been open about his experiences at Bungie. Last year, after the studio laid off more employees, he said he left Bungie because “their leadership is the worst I’ve worked with.” He described “rampant micromanagement, frequent toxicity and violations of their core values, and no ability to execute on their multi-franchise vision.”

Ouch...

They are already taking back control over Bungie's management through that performance-related clause.

I think if (when?) Marathon underperforms, they might downsize the studio and focus on D2 and building D3 since D2 is losing steam.
There's the rumours that Marathon went super out of budget and neeeds like a bazillion sales and constant mtx to be a success

Yeah Paul Tassai's mentioned it needs to be in the top 5 best selling games on the NPD charts this year to be considered an success. Which is just an insane metric that its not meet.

A brand-new job listing for a Senior Concept Artist at Dark Outlaw Games—spotted by The Game Post—includes a standout requirement: applicants must have advanced expertise with generative AI tools like Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and even ChatGPT.

This isn’t just a bonus skill, the studio is openly searching for artists who are comfortable creating, refining, and polishing both traditional and AI-generated artwork. The listing specifically mentions these tools by name, which seems to be one of the first times a PlayStation first-party studio has made such a direct push for generative AI experience.

Can a Sony studio not find themselves with bad PR for like 5 minutes. Havent heard much chatter about this, interestingly enough.

No big outlets has talked about it, as of now I think it's a ticking time bomb, when Eurogamer or IGN makes an article about it

MonolithSoft are currently looking for hires experienced in Houdini and Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD), which are currently underutilized technologies in Japan. Their aim is to improve the workflow for procedurally generated content, and they showcased a demo of a tool they've made that can generate cityscapes and streets off of greyboxes.

Didn't realize the leader, Jason Blundell, is the same dude that already fooled Sony once with deviation games.

How do you hit the same rock twice... in a row... without any time frame between both rocks at all.
