Atlus output strategy | Discussion thread

No, SMTIII HD led on Switch as far as we know. In Spain it led on Switch 62.5/37.5 and in Japan 52.2/47.8. I'd guess most western markets looked a lot like Spain too. This was also years ago though when PS software sales were a whole lot stronger in Japan.

That's what I meant by "about as well". I'm used to seeing 5:1 or worse, not these ratios within 2:1 or even close to 1:1. Shit's totally dire most of the time.

But SMT3HD is one of the very very few JRPGs turn-based JRPGs that sold about as well on PS as it did on Switch, so that pushes how believable it is for 4 or 5 to not come (despite the previous leaks/mines on 5).
Untrue, Switch had a 2:1 lead over PS for Nocturne

Atlus sent out high res assets for both games years ago to all media. You just have to get your hands on one of those files, it's not that difficult, especially if you know the right people
Western logos yes, those pop up in basic google searches even. The Japanese logos are apparently harder to come by in higher res.

Sure but again, the software landscape was also a lot more favorable to PlayStation for Japanese games in 2020/2021. I'd imagine the Persona remasters probably gave Atlus a better indication where things stand more recently.

In general it does seem like Nintendo is Atlus' lead market here though I suspect a lot of those 3DS sales are being driven by the attention the eShop shutdown is giving the platform in general. Most of those also have DLC people might've wanted to grab too. Sadly though Amazon's pulled the data and now I'm realizing I forgot to look up TMS when I had the chance.

And in other leak news I discovered an OLD 4chan leak (March 2021) that now appears to have been 100% on the money. Some dates and details shifted but it was largely right and might paint a worrying picture for Project Re: Fantasy.

Reposting the content (not linking to 4chan/archives):

Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD worldwide release date is May 25th, pre-
orders open tommorow. SMTV info tommorow, late 2021 (barring
delays)
Persona 5 Royal Switch, Steam, Xbox +
Game Pass soon (don't know when it's
going to be announced) Next Etrian Odyssey project (Switch) is scheduled for H2 2022 right now, Project Re Fantasy is supposedly
internally delayed more (some development troubles)

Nice get, the info really shows how Atlus game feel at home on Nintendo consoles (I wish we got info on TMS though :()

I don't know if I really believe the 4chan post, as it is both wildly far off on the release date for "Next Etrian Project" and doesn't even specify that it is just some ports of 1/2/3.

EDIT: Sorry, misread the sales thing.

Persona Q each during 200k in the US is crazy good, IMO.
A six months delay for a leak made almost two years ahead of time is not “wildly off” lol; plus all it says is “next etrian project”, which this collection absolutely qualifies as

So a little background but those sales aren't in the 1000s, they're total and only for the month of March 2023. Anything not listed sold under 50 copies during the month.

For some comparison the top selling game anyone checked was Zelda TOTK at 30,000+ sold (preordered), again just for March 2023.

There's some more numbers in this thread:

Ah, I thought it said Q2, not H2. Still, this seems so vague and missing the intermediate releases (Persona 3/4 ports), and misses PC for Etrian Odyssey. It had SMTV's release quarter (a whole 9 or 10 weeks before a specific date was officially announced in a Direct) and Persona 5 Royal ports, at least, but neither of those are/were surprising. The "EO Next" teaser had been out for years by the time of the leak and it feels like a bait and switch to play off of that . "Oh, it is totally these ports, and not the actual Next that they teased in 2018".

It said "new information tomorrow". What was the SMTV information released in March 2021?

Ah, also misread that. Thanks for the correction!

Oh wow this is from that mew Amazon tracker?
Wanna know how there were so many of those 3DS SMT games left to sell? Some of those game cost a small fortune in Europe.

Ew, that JSR thing at the end looks horrendous - and that's supposed to be one of those "Super Games" according to rumours...

OMG JET SET RADIO!

maybe it is just a concept material than a real project

off: is there really a chance that a really new Jet Set Radio comes out?

Keep in mind it's from 2021 so that was likely super early concept stuff thrown together right after the JSR service game was greenlit. P3R might look very different too tbh.

I wish we had the full reel, might have Crazy Taxi in there too!

It's apparantly from a survey from Swagbucks

Apparently the Yukari model is from Persona 3 Dancing In Moonlight but since this is 2021 footage and the game has yet to be released maybe this was a very early footage just meant to serve as a presentation to show what they have been workin on

The History of Megami Tensei
Before meeting the ATLUS executive, my legal representative said.
'Tokuma Shoten has not wanted to make MT 2 anytime soon. So ATLUS wants to make a game directly from your original novel ”Digital Devil story& New DDS . What do you want to do?

When I heard this, I had mixed feelings. The reason why MT became a hit was because of the power of each work, but Tokuma Shoten's advertising power was huge.
So I wondered whether it would be right to pass over Tokuma Shoten and sign a direct contract with ATLUS or not..

I was unsure, but the agent told me to knock it off.
'Tokuma Shoten didn't apply for the trademark rights for MT. That's why ATLUS has acquired the trademark right. I was surprised and angry at the same time.

Initially, a contract was signed for MT, with me as the author, the anime as a secondary use and the game as a secondary use of animation.
In cases like this, it is common in Japan for publishers to obtain trademark rights to protect the author.

Tokuma Shoten did not do its normal thing.
Later, this became a well-publicised case in the entertainment legal sector. It was never out in the open, though.
And I heard here and there that Tokuma Shoten's staff had a reputation for being irresponsible.

But I know the person in charge. He is very serious and would never make such a mistake.
After all, the executive produser does not like MT. When he heard that they were no longer going to develop the anime, he stopped acquiring the trademark rights. That's how it felt to me.

Suddenly I found myself in front of my agent, not speaking, but thinking about it.
He said, "What do you want to do? Do you want to stop?" He asked.
I said, "No, let's do it. This will make MT & SMT bigger".
Shin Megami Tensei was then released to the world.
Saving the best till last, time moves fast but ATLUS moves slow as we're still waiting for more details on the however many projects they have in the works (even they don't know!). Will there be any more fodder for pages of - ultimately meaningless internet drama, resulting from baffling platform choices and/or staggered announcement at different platform holder online events. Or maybe Sega Sammy Holdings has mandated day & date support for all major platforms...plus Nintendo Switch. Thanks to @fiendcode for building the list & @Ishaan for compiling daily tweets:
  • “There are currently five or six development lines in effect. Or about 10 when you include Vanillaware and other external companies we’re working with, plus technological research and development.” Atlus senior managing director Naoto Hiraoka, Weekly Famitsu via Gematsu

Kamitani continued, “Lastly, the title I’m working on right now won’t be finished for several years, but once that big title I’m telling you about is finished, I should get some development staff, so development of my project will finally move into full swing.” George Kamitari (Nintenderos via Gematsu)

Speaking of anniversaries, ATLUS must have something in mind for Shin Megami Tensei...then again after its PERSONA 25th Anniversary maybe it's better not to ask. A comprehensive collection (ATLUS AGES by M2!) with QoL improvements much like Phantasy Star on Switch might be too much to hope for...or is it? Maybe there's more to meet the eye with these from Megami Tensei creator Aya Nishitani reminiscing about SMT...much like akio discussing Metal Slug before announcing Black Finger JET, are they getting the old demonic band together?

'My saying I don’t distribute "Digital Devil Story" electronically in Japan has not directly related to the Games.
Readers for 30 years have told me that, This work can only be moved by the historical background of the 1980s.People who only know the present time don't get it.

I think so too. That is why I don’t distribute them electronically. However, I would like to distribute it to people overseas who don’t know either Japan in the 80's or Japan today, to hear their impressions. Overseas, there would be no drama like Digital Devil Story Volume 3.'

So it turns out Mutan actually led dev on EO Origins Collection!

This means the collection actually wasn't one of the "3 major projects" in dev simultaneously at 1st Production alongside SMTV and SH2. So what was?

Mutan also did support work on PQ2 so it makes sense they'd graduate to taking a more active role for the EO remasters. I wonder how long until we get PQ1-2 HD then...

Nah I doubt they are exclusive. The trailers are just going to be at the Xbox show.

Now I hope the come to PC and switch but Atlus has shown with SH2 they don't consider switch part of "all major consoles"

PC was pretty much confirmed in the trailers through the Windows Store logo.

I imagine a Steam release will be revealed on Tuesday, like what happened with the P5R port last year.

It is exactly like last year with P3P, P4G and P5R. I think it should be pretty obvious that both games are coming to all platforms. We'll just have to wait a bit longer.

P5T has SD characters, I can't see it skipping switch, as stupid as it sounds lol.
P3R, from a technical point of view, shouldn't have any issue to run on Nintendo console too. I think they'll both release everywhere, and if they don't, well, it would be dumb.

Small chance I guess they wait for Switch 2 to port P3R but I can’t imagine why. It doesn’t seem to be a very demanding game.

Gematsu seems to indicate both games are coming to Switch and PS4+5. I'd guess Sal probably knows given both games were already an open secret.

In the article, Sal did state its multiplat and he doesn't seem like the kind of person who would try and guess which platforms through an article. I think his source did tell him its Switch, PS4, PS5, and Steam on top of the Xbox One and Series versions.

Dunno why would anyone still entertain that twitter leak when it said that P3 Remake will release late this year.
Could have been a plan at some point then they delayed it after seeing how busy this year is already gonna be.

But the weirdness doesn't stop there since this is one of their more recent tweets about the new games

Across all the recent tweets, the impression I get is that the chances are high that this Twitter account is merely repackaging informations shared elsewhere.

It looks less demanding than persona 5 indeed
Is that even possible!?* P5 was a ps3 game and probably didn't have any physically based materials. P3 might be building off of SMT5's technology stack which would inherently put it above P5

*Rhetorical question

Just posting the link to the Gematsu article. As @Dakota Joestar mentioned it, the article only states that the game is multiplat without going into details.

It is still very much up in the air wherever the games will come or not on Switch.

It's possible but, I'd feel it would be a smaller developer like Artdink or something.
That possible too, though KS does work on 3rd party IP sometimes (Pokémon Conquest, Yo-Kai Sangokushi, Fire Emblem TH).

ArtDink also has SRPG credentials though (Lunatic Dawn series, Ogre ports, Triangle Strategy, etc) and Atlus contracted them before for some Soul Hackers 2 ports (PC, XBO).

Project Re:Fantasy lives and it's coming in 2024, titled Metaphor Re:Fantazio.

Seems like it'll be a next-gen exclusive!

One of the worst titles I've ever heard. It looked choppy but otherwise it looked great (and very ambitious)

I am gonna assume Persona 6 is not a 2024 title with Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor being next year along with the rumored Persona party game.
Looked amazing! Wonder if that means Persona 6 would be day 1 xbox as well
At this point, I think the only way Persona 6 is not on Xbox is if Sony manages to secure a time exclusivity for the game.
