Yeah strongest contender for first place right now is BL but the deciding factor will be the performance of it's new volumes. If they perform well then it's gonna be first.Blue lock has 10 million and Oricon 1st place nearly locked.
There is no chance at all for it to sell 10 million. No series will sell 10 million imo ( BL has a slight chance ). This and last week both were holiday weeks and every series in top 10,except One piece and JJK, saw a increase this week compare to last week . drops will be hard in coming weeks, film hype will eventually fade away and i think anything north of 5 million is best realistic option for it.Slam dunk is increasing every week
I know some will disagree with me but
I still think slam dunk will sell 10 million copies imo
The backlog will keep increasing more and more
CSM has only 1% chance of topping BL imo. And JJK has variable of second season unless it do some wonders, JJK has no chance at all of topping the chart. It may even not be able to top OP. It's backlogs are week and it's new volume drops are very hard. Hope the the second season able to do some wonders, fingers crossed.Prediction for 2023 sales
1. JJK - 8.5M (Being extremely generous here)
2. Chainsaw Man - 8.2M
3. One Piece - 8M
4. Blue Lock 7.7M
5. Spy x Family - 6M
6. Slam Dunk - 5M
7. My Hero Academia - 4.5M (3 volumes this year)
8. Tokyo Revengers - 3.5M
9. Kaiju no. 8 - 3M (3 Volumes this year)
10. Slime - 2.5M
Spy Family boost is still there from last week but this week little weak as One piece claims it's position again.Edistat (France) Ranking: Week 1, 2023 (Jan 2 - Jan 8)

Week 52, 2022 (Dec 26, 2022 - Jan 1, 2023)
I just don't have any faith in Blue Lock sales. Blue lock volume 22 is doing worse then it's backlog despite being released less than a month ago. It gives off the impression that people are buying volumes in bulk and not bothering to keep up with the story. CSM also gives off that same impression, but at the very least we know it's new volumes will sell 500k in a month.CSM has only 1% chance of topping BL imo. Blue lock volumes 21 and 22 are out of stock. All BL volumes suffer from stock issues to some extent but 21 and 22 moreso. As long as it keeps getting over 400k a week for its anime run then that would be 7.71 million minimum. With 4 more new volumes that would be more than enough to hit 10 million and guarantee the year. Though we have to see how it performs next few weeks.I just don't have any faith in Blue Lock sales. Chainsaw man 12 collected ~295k after its first four weeks up to the week preceding CSM 13's release, yet CSM 13 will probably end somewhere around ~450k fm or so, a grand total of +40k first month (I'm giving it a degree of frontloading since it released on week 1 of 2023, though could land a bit higher since it should still have some remains of its boost to bump up legs I guess). That is incredibly underwhelming and an extremely low sales upgrade from the anime in spite of the raw amount of new readers gained being quite high. Something like Bisque gained much less than CSM from its anime yet the actual sales gain for new volumes was higher (and I'm not talking about % but straight up raw numbers...), it's quite disappointing really. Won't even catch up to its pre-anime peak at this point.
I also don't expect much from new volumes of BL and it has no need to do so to out run CSM. As long as it sell around 400k in 2 or 3 months of its release it will sail through CSM. The lack of per volume sale will be filled with more number of volumes . i expect the sales of CSM in new volumes around 2.1-2.3 million and BL won't be far way from this point.I just don't have any faith in Blue Lock sales. I struggle to see BL keeping up 400k+ through all its anime run, should automatically drop a good chunk now due to holidays ending and start hitting natural decrease point in a few eps. There's really no need to for a year win though, requires a major collapse or a big surprise to miss, doubt either is happening. Definitely true that vols 22 and mayhaps 21 are seeing stock issues though, trend just doesn't line up (fairly uncharacteristic of kodansha to have stock troubles with anime though).Blue lock volumes 21 and 22 are out of stock. I don't see how CSM gets to 8.2 million and Kaiju 8 won't be getting in top 10 this year.
Definitely not having the same legs as 12, but wouldn't be shocked if it was slightly leggier than expected and landed ~470-480k instead, esp since first week of jan can be tricky in terms of determining holiday frontloading at times. Going to be a disappointing number either way.I think CSM v12 legs were due to the anime, I don't see volume 13 getting same legs. Yeah its disappointing but as long as it keeps the sales stable for future volumes and doesn't drop off heavily then it would be just another MHA.
Yeah the holidays makes things hard to predict. Kodansha made a mistake by not printing enough for the holidays, same goes for Bocchi but that was a small publisher so it was understandable.I struggle to see BL keeping up 400k+ through all its anime run, should automatically drop a good chunk now due to holidays ending and start hitting natural decrease point in a few eps. CSM getting to 8.2 million with nothing else lined up for the year is just not happening yea, Kaiju probably isn't either, though that 10th spot feels bound to be reeeeal low this year the way things are going, so who even knows. Definitely not cracking 3 million at this point though, so if it slips in, it'll likely do so on the back of a ridicolously weak threshold.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm struggling to think of what will even slot in that 10th spot as of now, unless something surprises and I think only real candidate left for that might be Oshi no Ko, it would probably fall onto something like Slime or well, yeah, Kaiju for the likely stuff to land here, and in that case I would probably assume they'd both go lower than 2.6M, probably closer to ~2.3M instead if anything, but even that might prove tough for Kaiju here lowkey. Might even be something like OPM I suppose (had it at ~1.7M for last year but it has so many chapters out of volume that it could actually put a lot out in a year to get around those esp with some even weak help from anime, but just a random thought, not really anything worth considering right now). I was thinking Frieren but that's on indefinite hiatus now LOL so well...yeah.Yeah the holidays makes things hard to predict. Kodansha made a mistake by not printing enough for the holidays, same goes for Bocchi but that was a small publisher so it was understandable.
Keeping up 400k+ is hard but as I said i want to see next few weeks since its a bit unpredictable now. But even assuming 300k for the next 11 weeks would give it a minimum of 6 million (3.300 + 2.767 currently). Though if it does lower than that then 10 million might be hard to get.
I agree on the 10th spot, do you think it can beat 2009's record (2.614.269) for lowest?
For CSM legs I meant long term beyond the first month period, v12 hit 426k fm but went up to 800k+ counting this week (or next two). I can't see volume 13 doing the same. At least as fast. CSM cannot afford losing readership though so I'd be worried if there's a decline, so best hope for it is being another MHA. I think that's what we should hope or look out for now that we know it won't be doing big numbers.
Yeah frieren was strong contender to enter the top 10 from new anime series (even more than kaiju and oshino ko) imo but the other day i read the news of hiatus so I'm not so sure now. Even when it was having breaks every week i was still hoping it may still have a chance but it doesn't look that way now. I hope author get well soon and return. I really liked the manga.I was thinking Frieren but that's on indefinite hiatus now LOL so well...yeah.
Yeah, same. I think we'll know by half year oricon though. Spring anime would have started and we would be able to pick out the most likely candidate by then, assuming no major dark horse beginning in fall. OPM chapters need to be redrawn by murata I think which is why they aren't released yet, and the anime is likely 2024 at this point. Frieren can still make it, top 10 won't be a big number so as long as it gets a decent boost that would be enough. I think the manga would return before. It has about 2 volumes ready for release too. If it doesn't and the anime is fall then yeah that won't happen.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm struggling to think of what will even slot in that 10th spot as of now, unless something surprises and I think only real candidate left for that might be Oshi no Ko, it would probably fall onto something like Slime or well, yeah, Kaiju for the likely stuff to land here, and in that case I would probably assume they'd both go lower than 2.6M, probably closer to ~2.3M instead if anything, but even that might prove tough for Kaiju here lowkey. Yeah CSM 13 obviously is getting nowhere near those post-fm legs. Though a lot of MHA's stability has to do with getting consistent anime content, CSM looks like it will have to wait over a year to get even just a second cour, definitely an uphill battle here, even moreso with such a disappointing transition, but sure let's hope for it.
Bit Off-Topic: Was any reason given for Frieren hiatus? I just started buying and reading the manga...Yeah frieren was strong contender to enter the top 10 from new anime series (even more than kaiju and oshino ko) imo but the other day i read the news of hiatus so I'm not so sure now. Yeah mostly agreed with this, though ease of mantaining readers can wildly vary and goes much deeper than just how big a series is (one piece is an icon of long-running stability at this point and we never got to observe the long-term sales behaviour of the only series that ever topped it).Yeah,same. Chainsaw man large marketing campaign, combined with the anime boost, and the numbers it received from them make me concerned about its future volumes without anything to help it. MHA indeed gets help from the consistent anime but I think the manga itself has a loyal readership. Bleach saw some drops even while the anime is running after all compared to Naruto. Its hard to keep numbers above 1 million stable and consistent and a lot easier under. Even so the drops shouldn't be too bad even if it happens. Though it wouldn't surprise me if it happened considering the market surprises in recent years.
Poor health of the author was the reason of hiatus. Manga had gone on many breaks of 2 to 4 weeks in last few months due the author's health. In fact, it didn't release 2 consecutive chapters without break for some months now.Bit Off-Topic: Was any reason given for Frieren hiatus? I just started buying and reading the manga...
Ah, thank you! I hope he recover well and soon.Poor health of the author was the reason of hiatus. Manga had gone on many breaks of 2 to 4 weeks in last few months due the author's health. In fact, it didn't release 2 consecutive chapters without break for some months now.
Prediction for 2023 sales
1. JJK - 8.5M (Being extremely generous here)
2. Chainsaw Man - 8.2M
3. One Piece - 8M
4. Blue Lock 7.7M
5. Spy x Family - 6M

8. Tokyo Revengers - 3.5M
9. Kaiju no. 8 - 3M (3 Volumes this year)
10. Slime - 2.5M
I do wonder if the CSM anime controversies affected sales or it just already reached the highest it could do when part 1 ended

2021's top-selling manga volumes for reference
2021 only had one new release in the top 28 best-selling manga volumes - Spy x Family #3. 2022.
2022 has 9.
2021 had 8 different series in the top 28, 2022 only has 4.
The One Piece new releases didn't rank last year because they received limited editions that split their sales in the ranking. Spy x Family and Demon Slayer just grew a lot compared to last year.
Do note that Demon Slayer 21, 22 and Spy x Family 8 received Limited editions that are not included in these rankings. Several other best-sellers may be missing due to that split, such as Demon Slayer 23 (divided in 3 editions), Berserk 41, some new My Hero Academia volumes or some new Jujutsu Kaisen volumes.
One Piece finally tops the volume ranking again (it hadn't happened since 2014 or 2015, not sure). 2016 was dominated by One-Punch Man's first volume, from 2017 to 2019, Dragon Ball Super new releases were first and for the past two years, Naruto's first volume was #1.
The 2022 ranking is from an overall book ranking, which is what the rank numbers are showing. A more detailed ranking (with numbers) should come in January.
It received a lot of pre-anime boosts from KnY wave/covid/volume 9 pv and anime trailers which has lowered its initial boost. I'm not sure what controversies you're talking about but if it was about the animation then the anime looked very much above average and I don't think the animation quality did this. After all we have a recent example in Tokyo revengers. It's just strange that CSM didn't blow up when it was almost perfectly positioned to do so (Massive marketing, new WSJ battle shonen etc etc). I really didn't expect Spyxfamily to have a bigger boost at all.I do wonder if the CSM anime controversies affected sales or it just already reached the highest it could do when part 1 ended
SpyxFamily and Kaiju 8 were also free yet broke records. I don't think that's the reason.they are reading online and don't care about buying volumes since it's free on J+ or any other reason.

In total, over 48 million manga volumes were sold in France in 2022, a +3.5% increase compared to 2021
Until I get numbers I won't be able to answer that first question, though my guess is that, indeed, the best-sellers are where that growth comes fromThanks Rouk! Do you know if the 3.5% increase is across the industry or is it focused mostly on the top sellers (One Piece)?
Chainsaw Man and Blue Lock seem quite low; I thought the anime and Christmas boost would at least push them over Kaiju 8, a manga without anime and only a few volumes out. Does that mean no hope for CSM & BL to be big in France? Or can we expect a huge wave in 2023?
Ah that's slightly disappointing if so. French market about to suffer a fair amount of decline when One Piece ends then lol.Until I get numbers I won't be able to answer that first question, though my guess is that, indeed, the best-sellers are where that growth comes from
For Blue Lock, I'd say it's a great result. And it should keep doing very well in 2023.
For Chainsaw Man, it's disappointing if you compare to other countries. But reality is that this result is in line with its performance since its release. French people just aren't that into the series. It's unlikely to ever be a contender for the top spots, like it is in a lot of other countries.
Naruto ended 6 years ago and is still going strong. I wouldn't be worried about the end of One Piece in France.Ah that's slightly disappointing if so. French market about to suffer a fair amount of decline when One Piece ends then lol.
I'm going to throw a really random guess here then.
OPM sold 3.6 million so far.
Assuming BL ends at 30 volumes and CSM at 20. BL would be at 2m LTD and CSM 1.5m.
It's not that strange. CSM was never meant to be explode. Its not for everyone. CSM has very limited fan base which love the carnage and gore with dark humour. Those covid boost are gone and you won't see any series explode like KnY, JJK and TR anymore. It's just strange that CSM didn't blow up when it was almost perfectly positioned to do so (Massive marketing, new WSJ battle shonen etc etc). I really didn't expect Spyxfamily to have a bigger boost at all.
Gore exists in nearly every popular battle shonen manga so I don't think the excessive gore harmed it that much. CSM fanbase is huge, I wouldn't call 1m volume sales in Japan limited or niche at all. They also clearly thought it would be super mainstream with that amount and kind of marketing they did. It's not that strange. CSM was never meant to be explode. Its not for everyone. I'm not saying it's numbers are not good they are very good imo. In fact, it exceeded my expectations.Gore exists in nearly every popular battle shonen manga so I don't think the excessive gore harmed it that much. Regardless its pulling good numbers still.
Just for the record KnY was well over JJK peak before covid even started in JP and was showing no sign of stopping at all.I'm not saying it's numbers are not good they are very good imo. In fact, it exceeded my expectations.
I'm just saying after seeing KnY, JJK boost, we now expect evry big series to explode like that. Those circumstances were different people had all the time in the world in covid, everyone was on internet so trends tended to do well. But now circumstances have changed, life has return to normal. Now people are busy in their everyday life again. So we won't be seeing another series to explode like that again (Not in normal circumstances at least).
I'm not saying excessive gore did the damage it's on the contrary. Carnage and gore is one it's core themes.
It's fan base is not limited as it is i was talking in comparison to KnY and JJK.
1,5 million at the end of may 2022Spy x Family:
France: 1 million (sold as of the 6th volume. Jan 2022)
I'm agree with you. it would have hit the 100million mark with or without covid but covid did help it to go extra mile.Just for the record KnY was well over JJK peak before covid even started in JP and was showing no sign of stopping at all.
