• Akira Toriyama passed away

Let's all commemorate together his legendary work and his impact here

Manga Sales | Discussion Thread

Okay, now that we’re at a new page, I wanted to ask everyone here a question:

What are some of your favorite manga? Or manga that you like to read at the moment? I think it could make for a some good talking points in terms of manga sales down the line.

I believe @Tbone5189 listed his favorites earlier onwards, so I got curious.
Classic Dragon Ball and Jojo are a joy to read.

I switched to reading the Naruto manga during the early War arc and was a fun experience. Switch to the One Piece manga right at the end of Punk Hazard and have been following since. Bleach halfway through the War arc and was alright.

The last new manga series I read was AOT. None of the new stuff interests me much or I'll just watch the anime. I did catch up on My Hero when Deku went rogue and One Punch Man for the Garou hype train but right now I only follow One Piece, Dragon Ball Super, and Boruto.

Having followed Togashi on Twitter since he created his account back in April, I think we are getting 20 at least. He has been consistently posting updates on the chapters for volume 39 for a while now. His most recent update yesterday was the first few pages of chapter 404.
Yeah, he's doing the manuscripts for the next batch of 10 chapters at this moments, but it's still midway through and.. it's only the manuscripts that are that far ahead, I don't know how much inking he's done and how much back and forth with editors and polishing it will still need for the 10 chapters to be actually ready. Again, it's possible, but I wouldn't count on it just yet. Let's see how his pace goes alongside the series return.

Alright

This is a test to see what could be done with Shoseki in this thread

Posting the full top 50 + the new releases of the top 100 seems like a good compromise since I can't realistically translate the entire top 500.

As for the "Boost" category, I added it to show what boosts are currently happening within the top 500, and how strong they are.
I'm only considering series that have something ongoing that started said boost.
This means that Tokyo Revengers, which keeps selling well, won't be added unless a new episode airs.
This means that while Aoashi is still doing well in the ranking, I'm not going to track how its boost will behave post-anime.
This means that I will stop tracking One Piece when the movie stops being in theaters.

Also I would rather have a short hiatus after this batch than another long hiatus.

I wouldn't mind if this boat trip continued for 50 chapters if it stays good (and maybe gets less text per page).

I'm looking forward to seeing my three favorite manga published at the same time (OP, HxH, CSM).
Hopefully Togashi can work out a healthy schedule and find some good assistants (or a successor for the art).
WSJ will need a big, old series in a few years. I wouldn't be surprised if HxH is the last ongoing series of the current lineup when OP ends.

Boruto Manga sells are so so bad
Even the anime ratings are bad too
I think wsj have 2 options now
1- rush the story to the timeskip cuz most people are getting bored with the story
2- cancel boruto manga and erase it from history
Kishimoto should do naruto part 3 and show the events that happened after the Last naruto the movie

Kishi should learn from Toriyama

When he made dragon ball gt non canon
And then made a successful show
Dragon ball super

Difference is Kishimoto is directly invested in Boruto as the writer while Toriyama didn't write anything for GT.

Boruto sales are... definitely nothing to write home about, but they are not awful, and it's definitely doing enough to justify it's existence in V-Jump, besides the usefulness in having something of the franchise running.

I see
Maybe Toriyama was just involved with designing some characters
Cuz I remember he designed goku SS4

But the latest volume sells were very terrible even by boruto standard imo

Why the Japanese fans don't care about bleach at all
The backlog sells are non exist zero
Even the new anime didn't help the backlog
mayb next week it will have some boost but since they have tons of others recent manga i doubt it will be huge like KNY

Because it's an older series (ended like 6 years ago, and even while it was running, the last few years had non-existent backlog sales), and those rarely get something charting after the fact, with some rare exceptions. And Bleach, although very, very popular in Japan, doesn't have the same relative popularity in there as it does in some places in the west, so it wouldn't really be one of those cases. It's probably selling something (and maybe a little bit more digitally), but not enough for it to chart.

I think Shueisha made a really really bad decision going for the sequel. People want the original characters and that's how you hook them with the nostalgia.
They should have made Naruto Super instead or some spin offs in the original timeline.

It likely won't be cancelled but I wonder how much brand damage it did to Naruto.

This makes me wonder what Tite Kubo is exactly planning for the follow-up to the Bleach one-shot he released last year. It takes place two years after the final chapter of the Manga, but it completely sets up a new story arc. Thing is though, I can't tell is this new story arc is a sequel with Ichigo's son Kazuki as the protagonist or just a new final arc of Bleach where Ichigo is still the protagonist.

Granted it does help Kubo only really created two children for the pairings at end. Kazuki as Ichigo and Orihime's son and Ichika as Rukia and Renji's daughter. While making all of the current captains and most vice captains, characters we are already familiar with. Plus with the set up in the one shot, it opens the door for many decease characters to come back as villains and tie up a major loose end from the story. So at least there is that hook for old fans is there.

With Boruto though, yeah I think it was a mistake to focus on new characters. Hell whenever I see someone talk about Boruto its almost always due to Naruto and/or Sasuke getting a really badass moment and not well Boruto himself.

Well, Bleach hasn't managed to chart in a single shoseki daily thus far, and for now it's fair to assume that it won't. If someone had any expectations for the backlog, it's probably time to let them go.

Bleach is having a Jump Remix reprint. Which is sold at convenience stores. If it sells then it won't be reflected into oricon or shoseki numbers.

Bleach needs a compact new edition to sell. The Dragon Quest Adventure of Dai one did really well alongside the new remake.

Slam Dunk also had a omnibus re-release a couple years ago and that resulted in it being one of the best selling Manga that year, unheard of for such an old series.

I think if Bleach had a very nice new edition run, like Slam Dunk got. It would at least have some decent sales I imagine.

Well its the point i touched on earlier and asked about. Shueisha just doesn't seem to want to do them for large volume count series (Nor did any other company as far as i know). But they do need to cross that bridge eventually.

Perhaps their data shows its too expensive or that the audience wouldn't be receptive to a lot of expensive volumes released in very short time frame.

That remix edition is quite old and as far as I can tell from a quick look around online stores they didn't even bother reprinting it in quite a long time, as it appears to be out of stock with no sign that it will be restocked soon. Remix editions aren't really substitutes for the real thing anyway.

The reprint started Oct 7.

I agree they aren't substitutes. Which is why I said they should have done a new edition.

huh, TIL I guess. Still, one volume every 2 weeks isn't really showing any sign of rush. A new edition would have done decently I guess, it clearly isn't doing much in gathering new fans but the old ones could have shown up for it.

Yeah it seems its going to take a year for the reprint to finish.
True its hard for a finished manga and manga this long to get new blood. But as you said It'll get the old fans to buy in, as well as some fans returning who dropped it and some new fans too.

Parasyte has done really well despite being an old finished manga didn't it? its circulation went from 11m to 25m, it didn't seem to get into oricon as well. But Parasyte didn't have any earlier anime or live action done afaik. And it was a short 10 volume manga.

I see 13M in 2013 and 25M in 2022, however the 25M is worldwide which is probably why the jump is big.

Jump Remix can appear slightly on Oricon. The Haikyu one sells like 5k on release week in the series ranking.

Didn't pay attention to the worlwide part and thought it was Japan only. Thank you.

I wonder how big the WW part and the anime/LA boost is then. It also had multiple editions since.

That's because some stores like Animate carries them right? Or does Oricon actually estimate/track some convenience stores?

Yeah I wish they had a breakdown when giving worldwide numbers, but alas.

Oricon doesn't track convenience stores, but if the demand is strong bookstores can order those remixes which is basically what happened with the haikyu remix. A lot of people went looking for it in bookstores (there are charts showing what books are most in demand stock wise), so bookstores ordered them pretty much.

Okay, now that we’re at a new page, I wanted to ask everyone here a question:

What are some of your favorite manga? Or manga that you like to read at the moment? I think it could make for a some good talking points in terms of manga sales down the line.

I've been diligently updating my MAL account for more than a decade now.
Probably missing a lot of older stuff I read while younger and a fair amount of one shot/very short series that I read in public libraries.

Very recently I've been pleasantly surprised by Sousou no Frieren
- It's fantasy but not isekai
- It doesn't turn into a harem story (having the main protagonist being female probably helps), nor have fanservice stuff that I remember of
- Characters being dumb isn't used as an excuse for plot convenience time and time again
- Everyone in the universe seem to be nice people overall and litterally oozes with positivity, it's so refreshing to read
- There's still some light humour/comical stuff, but it's not overused
- Bad guys exist and are bad guys, the twist on them is interesting though
- Frieren just carry that stuff all around

As for favourite manga overall I've always been partial to Taniguchi and Urasawa works, the latter though is unfortunetely getting incredibly repetitive on his long serialized works (20th Century Boys, Monster, Billy Bat, Asadora) it's no surprise that the two series that I liked most from him are Master Keaton and Pluto where scenario was handled mostly by someone else, they also both differ a lot from what he does by himself, Pluto being shorter and more intense while being an incredible retelling of Astro Boy story, while Master Keaton is a laid back episodic japanese Chuck Norris that is just a joy to read from time to time.
Taniguchi there's Summit of the Gods obviously, some personal bias from me there, overall it's been a wild rid to discover his bibliography from his young days where he drew/wrote action/sexy/violent stuff to his later days where he would grab you by telling the story of an old couple and their dying dog in such an emotionnal way.

A random discovery as well, Ao no Flag supposedly a Shonen but looking a bit like a shoujo, honestly the story in itself is a bit hard to believe (especially in Japan of all places) and the maturity of most of the characters involved (all of them being teenagers) will make you bat an eye (some are clearly used by the author as his own mouthpieces) , but barring that it's an incredibly educating piece of work about feelings, sexuality, mutual understanding and compassion that I would have love to read while younger.

Jujutsu in terms of this arc has become kind of weird, half of the time i don't understand what is going on with the new powers
Thank you... I thought it was just me getting confused with each new power

***

Also, being a fan for HxH got to be the most frustrating experience... I gave up after the the second hiatus after the two years break

JJK recently does seem like it’s being written for us nerds who love theorycrafting fights between people with varied supernatural abilities.

I need to reread it because it's been years but that was the most impactful Urasawa's work for me by far, like I said the "short" (it's only 8 volumes) story basically fixed Urasawa's style which is really dragging his plot for a looong loooooong loooooooooong time (although I'm sure many love that) and he loves to build up mysteries for so long that the big reveals near the end often end up not living up to expectations.
An anime adaptation was announced years ago, but recently there were rumours it was cancelled (due to stuff from preproduction being sold on an auction website), but sometimes projects stay silent and come back from nowhere so there's still some hope

Summit of Gods movie is pretty good for what it is but it's not a good replacement for the original story, it has the general idea, part of the atmosphere and the overall build up the original story has but due to its format it litterally cut like half or two thirds of the content the manga has, and it's not like it was fluff, everything that was present had its purpose.
Considering they had 1h30 to work with that was the best they could do, but two or three movies would have made it a more faithful adaptation, and if one had to choose between the movie or the manga I would still direct them to the manga every time.

Just wanted to drop some statistics from the first 24h of the Chainsaw Man anime
  • 20.4k upvotes in the r/anime post (most upvoted 1st episode of any series ever and in the top 5 of the most upvoted episodes ) and 227 awards (EDIT: currently at 20.9k, reddit post should end up close to 22k within 48h since the episode released)
  • on the MAPPA youtube channel the OP has 6.1M viewes and the ED has 1.8M, while on the official CSM pr account op has 282.6k likes and ED has 118k liked
  • #chainsawman has been trending since yesterday and has 433k tweets
This is only a few, but the number of views from reuploads is much higher.
An explosive start worldwide, will be interesting to see how much of an impact the first episode had on volume sales.

Oshi no Ko's Anime adaption will have a 90 minute first episode and air in 2023. Along with Rei Takahashi being the voice actress for Ai.

This has been an award-winning darling in Japan and selling incredibly well. As someone who is caught up on the Manga, trust me this is gonna be one of the big breakout series of 2023 for both the Anime and the Manga.

Looking forward to the spike in Chainsaw Man sales now the anime is releasing.
i think Blue Lock will have better boost since the fujoshis will replace Haikyu with this and since the world cup is coming soon it just need a good performance from the national team to attract more reader

Yeah but Slam Dunk and Bleach are completely different levels of importance in Japan. Kind of hard to compare both series tbh.

Not if it doesn’t survive cancellation.
Well first season is definitely cooming but not sure about future.

When a light novel is adapted to a manga how the royalties from manga sales are split between author and artist. For example how much does Fuse get from manga sales of tensura??

Do they split 50'50 or original owner company gets more profit?
Like French publisher of one piece is Glenat and shueisha is original owner of the brand.

I don't know if I can share the unofficial twitter account so
They said"According to Issue #47's Preview, Super Smartphone by Hiroki Tomisawa & Kentaro Hidano has officially ended in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #46."
Finally, one of the weak manga is out of the way

According to Xavier Guilbert, the publisher profit may be split 50-50 between the local publisher and the author. And the publisher profit represents about 8% of the price of the volume. So 4% of a volume's price would go to the author.

This doesn't seem to include the Japanese publisher, so I'm not sure. But considering the local publisher pays the JP publisher on a volume to volume basis for the licence, maybe the JP publisher doesn't get royalties?

Where does the remaining 92% goes??
If the local publisher pays for license then shouldn't the get the whole profit after paying author??

Manufacturing the book and the store's fees.
Still 92% is a big number store's fee must be high. They might be earning more than publishers at this rate lol.

Does anyone about this process. I'm very curious about this but i got no solid information.
